Nurturing Early Learners (NEL)

NEL (Nurturing Early Learners) is a public preschool educational program in Singapore. The program’s various approaches will allow for the nurturing of various skills that children require for future development, such as assisting children in discovering and developing their talents, encouraging them to pursue a passion, being confident in their own abilities, and promoting the diversity of skills in children in academics, sports, and the arts.

What is NEL?

Why was the NEL created?

Preschool education establishes the groundwork for lifelong learning and impacts young children’s subsequent growth and knowledge. Quality preschool experiences have been demonstrated to make a difference in children’s future learning.

To prosper in a rapidly changing world and be prepared to face future difficulties, our students must be equipped with the required abilities for learning and life in the twenty-first century. These are some examples:

  • Having “a desire to learn, explore, and be prepared to think outside the box”
  • The ability to “think critically, assess options, and make sound decisions”
  • The ability to “work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, with different ideas and perspectives”

Young toddlers learn rapidly because they are always asking questions and seeking solutions to issues. As a result, a good and engaging learning approach for a kid will be developed via play and group activities, with the ultimate objective of encouraging each individual child’s drive to learn and curiosity to explore.

What is NEL?

The NEL (Nurturing Early Learners) program is intended to assist youngsters in achieving their learning objectives in the following areas:

  • Aesthetics and Creative Expression
  • Discovery of the World
  • Language and Literacy
  • Motor Skills Development
  • Numeracy
  • Social and Emotional Development

With the ultimate goal of child development,

  • A confident personhas a strong sense of right and wrong, is adaptable and resilient, knows himself, is discerning in judgment, thinks independently and critically, and communicates effectively.
  • A self-directed learner who takes responsibility for his own learning, who questions, reflects, and perseveres in the pursuit of learning.
  • An active contributor who is able to work effectively in teams, exercises initiative, takes calculated risks, is innovative, and strives for excellence.
  • A concerned citizen who is rooted in Singapore, has a strong civic consciousness, is informed, and takes an active role in bettering the lives of others around him.
What is NEL?

It has taken many years for Singapore’s education system to be altered and polished so that it may be flexible and diversified, offering students with more alternatives to fit their various interests and learning styles. Children are encouraged to take care of their own learning by selecting what to study and the best learning technique for them. Schools have a role in supporting children’s educational backgrounds to guarantee their overall development, both in and out of the classroom.

Mid-Autumn Festival at Marvel House

Mid-Autumn Festival at Marvel House

The Mid-Autumn Festival in children’s minds is the sound of drums and lion dance, the twinkling lights of the stars, and the ancient tray filled with delicious fruit cakes. And there is also the image of The Moon, Hang Nga, Tho Ngoc, and together they listen to the story of Chu Cuoi. Every year, the atmosphere for celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival at Marvel House is always bustling with sounds and colors. Our children immerse themselves in traditional festivals in a very personal way, and after all, left in them is the joy of childhood and beautiful memories of traditional festivals with friends and teachers!
However, a full Mid-Autumn Festival is when we come back home, sit down with our loved ones at the table, eat a piece of cake, and enjoy some tea under the warm golden moonlight, right?
Marvel House Kindergarten wishes all our families and children a very happy and emotional New Year’s Day!

Making sticky rice mooncake with students of Guardians of Galaxy class

Making sticky rice mooncake with students of Guardians of Galaxy class

With time, many traditional festivals and customs have gradually disappeared.

However, in our country, the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Lunar New Year or the Lantern Festival (on the full moon day of the August lunar month), is still loved by all ages because of its spiritual meanings. On this occasion, the family will prepare a tray with a lot of fruit cakes to offer to the ancestors, showing respect and remembering the roots. Family members have the opportunity to gather together and chat, enjoy tea and watch the moon.

It is an opportunity for children to play together, watch the lion dance, break the feast, process the lights, let themselves be in the imagination with Chu Cuoi and Hang Nga…

The introduction and maintenance of traditional customs for young children is extremely important and necessary because the children themselves will continue these good traditional values for future generations. This week, our GG students took turns with teachers to learn and prepare paper lanterns, and today I was able to make my own delicious grapefruit-scented cakes that are a feature of the Mid-Autumn Festival!

Children must have had their own feelings about the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival and the bustling atmosphere preparing for the past few days. Until tomorrow, we will watch lion dance, break the feast, and let’s celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival together!

Create a Lanterns for Mid-Autumn Festival

Create a Lanterns for Mid-Autumn Festival

Colorful Lanterns Hang High, so the Mid-Autumn Festival is coming, Mom and Dad!

“August Full Moon

Shining like a mirror

Round like a cake

Hanging in the sky…”

The weather has gradually become gentler in August, and another mid-autumn reunion season is coming. At this Mid-Autumn Festival, in addition to pies, cakes, and fruit trays, children will show off their skills in making colorful lanterns for their parents to enjoy on the full moon night of their family reunion.

Under the careful guidance of the teacher, along with balloons and milk glue, students have made super unique lanterns to take to the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The above activity is within the framework of a series of development activities for preschool children under the NEL education program of the Ministry of Education of Singapore for the comprehensive development of creativity and fine motor skills training for children and prepares children for a strong foundation for later exploration and learning. Through observing the teacher’s instructions, children learn patience and meticulousness. Besides, by using a brush to smear milk glue on bubbles and using a pen to decorate lanterns, our children can practice fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination to complete the final work.
